A 2 Week Hydration Challenge with Brita

Growing up in a hot country like Australia, you learn at a young age the importance of staying hydrating. When temperature soar, the last thing you need is to find yourself without access to water, even if it’s just for a short period. Because of this, many of us Aussies have the habit of bringing a bottle of water with us everywhere we go, even during winter. We sip on it throughout the day, anywhere at any time. As a result, we easily meet our daily water requirement of 2lt a day. However, since moving to France, I’ve let this good habit slip. It’s rare these days that I put a bottle of water into my hand bag, and even at home I find that I consume a lot less than I should – naughty naughty, I know.

When Brita contacted me to see if I’d like to try one of their purifying water jugs, I thought it would the perfect opportunity to start a two-week hydrating challenge. The idea behind the challenge is to simply consume a minimum of 2 litres of water every day, for 2 weeks, to get myself back into the habit of meeting this daily requirement. My Brita Fill & Serve jug made the challenge easier and actually saved me a lot of money. I didn’t buy any bottled water during this time. When I was at home I used the jug directly, but when I was out and about, I made sure to fill up a reusable bottle with the filtered water from my jug. I find that filtered water tastes better and it’s nice to know that I’m not consuming any nasty contaminants often found in regular tap water. Even now my challenge is over, I still use the jug every day. If you’re a coffee addict like me, you may be interested to know that your coffee will taste a lot better if you make it using the filtered water from your Brita jug.

Now that the challenge is over I thought I’d share with you my findings. I’ve noticed 3 surprising changes to my body and general wellbeing since I started drinking 2 litres of water a day. They are:

A Reduction in Fatigue

After lunch, more often than not, I’m crazy tired. My general solution is to opt for a caffeine hit. However, since starting my challenge, I find that I’m less fatigued and don’t necessarily need the coffee to get me through the day. It turns out that the number one symptom of dehydration is fatigue and weakness. When your body doesn’t receive enough water, various body functions slow down, leaving you feeling tired and sluggish. Replacing (or complimenting) your afternoon coffee with a couple of glasses of water will help you feel more energised and less tired throughout the day.

Glowing Skin

Dehydration can leave your skin looking dull and increases the appearance of any fine lines or wrinkles. Increasing your intake of filtered water, helps rid your body of toxins leaving you with glowing, youthful skin. A study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, also found that drinking over 2 litres of water a day on a long-term basis can have positive effects on the density and texture of your skin. When I started my challenged I was intrigued to see if water really is a miracle skin rejuvenator and I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. Increasing my hydration levels left me with smoother more glowing skin and the fine lines around my eyes became slightly less noticeable.

A Reduction in Hunger

Hands up if you confuse hunger with thirst? I know I, like many other, do. By not drinking enough water, I found I was constantly hungry and reaching for snacks. It’s dangerous territory and can see the scale shoot up very quickly. Since I started the challenge, I find that I’m much less hungry and snack a lot less (although from time to time, I still can’t resist). If you think you’re confusing hunger with thirst, try replacing your snack with a glass of water. If you’re still hungry 30 minutes after, have something to eat, if not, you know you were just thirsty.

So, there you have my findings. If you struggle to drink 2 litres of water a day, I really do encourage you to participate in this challenge. I was really surprised by how good I felt once the two weeks had come to an end. As I said above, using a purifying jug, such as the Brita Fill & Serve Jug, makes the challenge much simpler. It’s easier to track how much water you’re consuming, it saves you money, and it ensure that you are providing your body with water that’s free from any nasties.
